Newborn Care

You’ve just had a baby, perhaps the most awe-inspiring experience in life. The prospect of caring for your new little one can seem at once thrilling and overwhelming. The Wifeys are here to help.

Immediately after birth we monitor mother and newborn until stable. We also conduct a thorough newborn exam. We offer Vitamin K injection and eye prophylaxis, if desired by the parents. While at the birth center and during subsequent postpartum visits to your home, we will support you, your partner and family members in learning to care for your newborn (or simply help carry some of the load if the baby is not your first child).

We make sure that everyone in the household is comfortable with the new child, and ready to master the basic of caring for the new baby. Questions? Email us at

Newborn Care Basics

All the podcasts and blog posts in the world can’t prepare you for what it is really like to hold, feed and care for the new life you just brought into the world. Your baby is unique, and the experience of learning to care for your baby is uniquely your own. Among the basics that we cover are the following:

  • Handling a newborn baby

  • Supporting your newborn’s neck

  • Swaddling your baby, which provides great comfort to most infants

  • Breastfeeding support, including latching techniques

  • Feeding frequency

  • What to expect with sleep cycles (or the lack thereof immediately following birth)

  • Benefits of co-sleeping and how to do so safely

  • Burping the baby to release gas

  • Changing your newborn’s diaper

  • What to expect from your baby’s bowel movements (hint: it’s not like an adults)

  • Bathing your baby

  • Cleaning the umbilical cord

  • Caring for a circumcision, should you choose to have one

  • Dressing your baby

  • Clearing the baby’s nasal passages

  • Taking your baby’s temperature

  • Tips for soothing your baby
