Monterey Birth & Wellness Center is committed to offering our community high-quality, integrative care, and we are pleased to offer three distinct types of ultrasounds (also known as sonograms), Pregnancy Ultrasounds, Gynecological Ultrasounds and Infertility Ultrasounds. We collaborate with one of the most skilled sonographers in the region. Our clients have been seeing Lance Dursi, RDMS in his Los Gatos office for over a decade and we are thrilled to be offering his services in-house. Many families will choose to have 1 to 3 ultrasounds to monitor the health of the pregnancy and developing baby. The fetal ultrasound can be performed abdominally or vaginally depending upon the gestational age of the fetus. This examination will include fetal measurement, anatomy screening, gender determination, (after 13 weeks) position, placenta location, and amniotic fluid volume assessment.
A client can expect to be seen in a warm environment and in a punctual fashion. The ultrasound always includes:
Accurate fetal gestational age, Estimated Due Date
Thorough fetal anatomy screening
Fetal weight, measurements and patterns of growth
Placenta and umbilical cord location
Amniotic fluid volume assessment
* If desired * accurate fetal gender determination
Signs of fetal abnormalities

More on HD, 3D and 4D Ultrasound
This amazing, cutting-edge technology allows you to see the clearest picture of your baby. An HD 3D view of a baby’s face can even show expression, and sometimes unique family traits such as the shape of a nose, lips, or a cleft chin can be identified. These pictures look as though you were inside the womb with your baby!
With our HD 4D technology, we can see moving HD 3D images of your baby. Often we can see a baby yawn, suck its thumb, poke out its tongue, and swallow amniotic fluid.
A gynecologic ultrasound is often used to image the female reproductive organs to evaluate their size, shape, and consistency. The most common indications for gynecologic ultrasound are ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, infertility, and to check for pelvic masses like fibroids.
Some of the conditions that a gynecologic ultrasound can detect are ovarian cysts, uterine and ovarian tumors, and ruptured cysts. The size and consistency of these masses can help decide a treatment plan for you.
This test is an imaging test which is done typically using a vaginal ultrasound probe. The reason for this type of exam to be performed internally is that the closer the probe is to the anatomy of interest, the clearer the images are. So, rather than a patient filling their bladders and placing a probe on the abdomen, the probe is gently placed in the vagina and steered to view the pelvic anatomy. Since the sound waves which create the images do not have to project through the patient's skin, fat, muscle, and full bladder, the sound waves have not been degraded. In some instances, both an abdominal and vaginal pelvic ultrasound are performed to evaluate a larger mass.
An ultrasound for infertility is an examination which can identify pelvic conditions that could prevent conception. These can include polycystic ovarian disease, fibroid, signs of hormonal imbalance, pelvic masses, endometriosis, and uterine anomalies. This examination is typically performed vaginally for the greatest clarity of imaging and accurate measurements. Ultrasound can be a very useful tool in determining barriers to conception. The information gathered from your ultrasound can help tailor a plan specific to your unique needs and hopefully get us one step closer to achieving your dream. Like gynecologic ultrasounds, infertility ultrasounds are also typically done using a vaginal ultrasound probe. A probe is gently placed in the vagina and steered to view your pelvic anatomy, allowing for clearer images due to the closer proximity.
Lance Dursi, Sonographer
The clients of MBWC have become accustom to relaxed, respectful, compassionate care.
And why should your ultrasound experience be anything less? Our Sonographer, Lance Dursi, is registered by the American Register for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) and has spent his 35-year career focusing on fetal diagnostic ultrasound. Mr. Dursi has helped train obstetrical residents from Stanford University Hospital and Kaiser Hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is widely recognized that an ultrasound examination is only as good as the technologist, and we have one of the very best available.
Prior to our collaboration with Lance, many of our clients have traveled to his Los Gatos office and returned with glowing reviews. We found that their other ultrasound sonographers lack experience, communications skills and operate with poor equipment. These are very common problems now that many practitioners are offering ultrasound services in their private offices. Many of these operators are not RDMS certified, which leaves their qualifications and skill level in question. The ultrasound scanners in those settings are often the cheapest and lowest quality available. With Lance, one can expect a relaxed and interactive ultrasound utilizing the most advanced ultrasound technology.
In order to offer quality ultrasounds without sacrificing time and attention, all ultrasound are cash pay at the time of service. Upon request, you will be provided with a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for a potential reimbursement. Like with midwifery fees, most families will find that these prices are comparable or lower than the typical out of pocket costs associated with using insurance at other facilities.
The Monterey Birth & Wellness Center is one of only 18 accredited birth centers in California, and the only one in central California. Accreditation is a mark of quality and expertise achieved by relatively few freestanding birth centers in the U.S.A.
